VA Benefits for Stair Lifts, Ramps & Home Accessibility

Reigning Mobility is a VA-approved provider and a women-owned, service-disabled veteran-owned small business. Most of our work is for veterans, through VA medical centers and clinics across Florida. We install stair lifts, wheelchair ramps, porch lifts, ceiling lifts, vehicle lifts, pool lifts and automatic door openers, and we understand the VA process from the veteran’s side and the contractor’s side.

This page explains the main VA programs that can help pay for home accessibility equipment, and how to get started. Program rules and amounts are set by the VA and can change, so always confirm details with your VA care team.

VA Programs That Can Help Pay for Accessibility Equipment

HISA Grant (Home Improvements and Structural Alterations)

The HISA grant is run by VA Prosthetic and Sensory Aids Service and helps veterans make medically necessary changes to their home, such as ramps, stair lifts, wider doorways and accessible bathrooms. It is a lifetime benefit:

  • Up to $6,800 for veterans with a service-connected condition, or a service-connected disability rating of 50 percent or more
  • Up to $2,000 for veterans with a non-service-connected condition who are enrolled in VA health care

SAH and SHA Grants

Veterans with certain severe service-connected disabilities may qualify for larger disability housing grants to build, buy or adapt a home:

  • Specially Adapted Housing (SAH): up to $126,526 for fiscal year 2026
  • Special Home Adaptation (SHA): up to $25,350 for fiscal year 2026

The VA adjusts these amounts each year based on construction costs. Eligibility depends on the specific service-connected condition, so check with the VA or your Veterans Service Officer.

Equipment Through VA Prosthetics

Many mobility items, including some lifts and vehicle equipment, are provided through your VA medical center’s Prosthetics department when prescribed by your VA provider. In these cases the VA orders the equipment and works with an approved contractor, such as Reigning Mobility, to install it.

How the Process Usually Works

  1. Talk to your VA provider. Explain the difficulty you are having at home, such as climbing stairs, getting in the front door or transferring from bed. Your provider documents the medical need.
  2. Prosthetics consult. Your provider places a consult with the Prosthetics department at your VA medical center, or you can ask about a HISA consult.
  3. Home evaluation and estimates. A contractor visits the home and prepares a written, itemized estimate. Reigning Mobility provides free evaluations and detailed, itemized estimates.
  4. VA review and approval. The VA reviews the request and estimates. Do not start work before approval, or the VA may not pay for it.
  5. Installation. Once approved, we schedule and complete the installation, train you and your family, and work with the VA to close out the job.
